Det var en av de första vetenskapliga expeditionerna till Antarktis, en i början på 1900-talet i stort helt outforskad kontinent. Kantad av strapatsrika äventyr och umbäranden avslutades den dock lyckligt och med stor vetenskaplig framgång. On 16 October 1901 Otto Nordenskjöld departed from Sweden for Antarctica.
